YA Character Nice List

Tuesday 12 December 2017

Yesterday we had the naughty list, featuring ten YA characters that I think deserve to get coal this Christmas. If I'm being honest, writing the nice list was much harder, not because I didn't have plenty of protagonists to choose from, but because I couldn't think of that many to single out as particularly good. I love a flawed MC but I managed to find a fair few I thought were worthy of the nice list!

After all it's the nice list not the perfect list.

Mark Blackthorn from The Dark Artifices series by Cassandra Clare
I love him so much. I wasn't sure who would end up being my favourite when I started reading Lady Midnight but I instantly clicked with Mark. I think it was because he was so endearing, his transition back to Shadowhunter life from being with the wild hunt in faerie for so long, meant even wearing shoes was a foreign concept. He deserves all of the presents for what he's been through.

Simon Spier from Simon Vs. The Homosapiens Agenda by Becky Albertalli
I'm on a total Simon Vs/Love, Simon hype right now, I've never been so excited for contemporary film in my life. Simon meets a boy online, a boy who he doesn't what they look like, he just knows that he's talking to someone he goes to school with. They fall for each other and even though they're both in the closet, they are trying to make it work. Simon is on the good list and is getting all of the Oreos for Christmas.

Rufus and Mateo from They Both Die At The End by Adam Silvera
Damn you Silvera. He did not help my love/hate relationship with his books by writing this one. As you can guess from the title, Rufus and Mateo just barely make it to the end of their book and it's heartbreaking. They are both on the Nice List because they deserved so much better than what they got. They aren't just getting presents, they're getting a holiday, animal friends and a big house with room for all their friends.

Finnick Odair from The Hunger Games series by Suzanne Collins
Another character who deserved better. Finnick doesn't get to see his little boy have his first Christmas, I'm not even convinced Christmas is a thing in Panem what with everything that was going on, but he doesn't get to share a lot of his son's firsts. So Finnick is on the Nice List and he gets all the time he wants with his family.

Addy from One Of Us Is Lying by Karen M McManus -
I did want to put Nate on the Nice List because he is my snowflake but I thought Addy would be more appropriate. Out of all of the characters I feel like Addy made the biggest changes in her life, and she really came through for her new friends when they needed her at the end of the book. For that reason and that she's just a badass, Addy is on the Nice List.

Luna Lovegood from the Harry Potter Series by J.K. Rowling
See specials mentions for my actual Harry Potter bae. There wasn't a whole lot of characters that I thought could go on this list, everyone seems to have done something that would get their name scratched off it at some point. So I have went with one of the few pure characters in the Harry Potter universe, Luna. I don't give Luna nearly enough love and she deserves all the creatures and eccentric clothing she wants for Christmas.

Special mentions to Draco Malfoy and Magnus Bane who are my favourite YA characters and get to be on my Nice List even if their slightly checkered past means Santa would give them everything they asked for. Both of them are good daddies now and are trying to make better decisions and that is okay with me!

Thanks for reading <3

  1. Simon is the absolute loveliest, and he very much deserves to be on the Nice List. There are loads of people I could add but my main two would be Ade from Boy in the Tower and Mac from Love, Lies and Lemon Pies!
