When I saw Faye was reaching out to bloggers for a blog tour, I knew I had to apply. I saw so much about Louise Cole an The Devil's Poetry last year amongst my friends, I knew I had to read this book. I'm also a real sucker for YA thrillers and I never get to read enough of them. So, without going on too much, lets get into the review.
I was hooked on this book from the word go because it's set in the near future, in a world at war. We see scary things in the news everyday, the war and conflict is so reflective of the world we live in that this book feels like a fantasy land and real life at the same time. This helped with the thriller aspect of the book. For me there is nothing scarier than the real-world, the TV show Black Mirror quite often terrifies me for this reason, and this book had a similar effect.
The story follows Callie -I loved her. Callie is 17 and is living in fear of being chosen to fight for her country with what is essentially World War 3 going on -scary in a real way right? She is given a book in a club and told not to read it, which of course spells trouble. No reader is going to resist reading a book they're told not to read, though in my world it would probably sit on top of a TBR pile for six months first. Thankfully, Callie gives in (which was The Order's hope because very few people can actually read from the book) and discovers that this isn't just a book, it has power and it's a power that she will need to harness to save the world.
The book can bring peace, so of course there are those out there who want to stop Callie before she can do that. The Cadaveri oppose the order and are after Callie. There are twists and turns and the whole time I was questioning everyones intentions, who can be trusted... When world peace is at stake, what is it going to cost? I won't say any more about the plot because you should definitely check it out if you like YA Thrillers. Look out for Louise Cole on the Kindle Store.
I really enjoyed this book, there isn't anything I would really pick out as a fault it was that good. It was fast-paced and Louise's writing style is beautiful, in a dark and twisty kind of way, which is my favourite type of beautiful. I'm really looking forward to the next book and I only just finished reading this one.
