No one believes a liar, even when they're telling the truth. Even the tag line for this book sends chills down your spine and you know that you're in for a confusing journey full of twists and turns. Sarah J Naughton does not disappoint in that aspect. For the first few chapters things seemed to move a little too quickly and I got lost and had to re-read small sections of the book in order to make sure I did not miss anything.
Once you have gotten into this book you are held by the characters and plot which are equally as compelling as each other. Mags is a lawyer in America but travels home to Scotland following her brother's accident. She hasn't seen much of Abe in recent years but as next of kin, Mags steps up to find out what happened to him. She meets Jody, Abe's fiancee, and is filled in on their relationship bug something doesn't feel quite right.
Jody hasn't had the easiest life, there's a lot of detail in her character that would warrant Mags' suspicions and I must admit I didn't warm to Jody as much as I could have but her depiction of Abe helps you feel connected to a character who cannot speak for himself, since he's in a coma following the accident that sparked this book.
I would recommend this book to anyone who is a fan of intense reads as some of the scenes are quite graphic and may not be to everyones taste. If, like me, you enjoy feeling shocked by what you read; you won't be disappointed by Tattletale. Definitely read at your own discretion.
The main story is told by Mags, Jody and also Abe and Jody's neighbour Mira. Parallel storytelling is something I am seeing more and more in books and it's something I really enjoy. Getting a story within a story makes for a much more interesting read and the variation keeps you even more hooked on the book as a whole.
What you will take from the book is that everyone is lying in some way or another, the tag line is not referring to one person individually. The only one who knows the truth is Abe, but since he's in a coma he won't be much help in that aspect. As frustrating as it is not knowing what or who to believe, the story is wrapped up nicely and the truth does come out but I won't spoil that for any of you.
I could have easily finished this book in one sitting I was enjoying it that much, not only is it fast paced but it's about 100 pages shorter than the last few books I have read, but nothing is missing from the book at all so there is no excuse not to preorder Tattletale now. It's an intense read that will no doubt stick with you the rest of the year.
